Biography
Private Joe Brown was on shore leave in Egypt when, without warning, a huge sandstorm enveloped the city. Unable to find shelter, he was caught up in its torrential wake, violently tossed about by mighty desert winds. Oddly, Joe soon found himself within an eery calm that lay at the heart of the sandstorm. Finally able to see, he discovered that the storm itself was not at all natural. For in the eye of this storm he bore witness to a secret battle between mystical hero, The Scarab Beetle, and ancient sand ifreet, Topeshazan.
As the hero defeated his foe, the sand demon's essence dissipated in the wind and instantly the skies were clear. Joe would find out that the sand that had covered him completely was what once made up Topeshazan. Though its evil was no more, a fraction of its power remained in the sand that now penetrated Joe's very being. Blaming The Scarab Beetle for this mishap, Joe went AWOL to demand some answers. Finding none, he now fights alongside the hero to turn his curse into a gift.
Affiliations
Joe Cairo has no affiliation with any supergroup on the Liberty server. However, he had maintained a storied association with The Scarab Beetle for some time and, presumably, has a connection with the United States military.
Personality
Joe is not a complicated man nor is he a particularly outgoing one either. He has simple wants and is fine with a night in reading about world politics or an afternoon hitting the punching bag. But he's polite to his elders, often sirring and madaming to the point of being known for it, and aside from going AWOL, is a pretty solid follower of rules. And above all, he's just a nice guy.
If anything, he was the perfect foil to The Scarab Beetle, as the mystical hero could only be described as eccentric and zany. The level-headed of the two, Joe's deadpan would sometimes equal but never eclipse his mentor's outrageous use of non sequiturs and out of context observations. And it was always Joe, the far more calm and collected of the two, who could stay on task long enough to figure out some solution.
Despite his reticence and somewhat flatness in personality, Joe has quite the reputation for being a ladies' man. Having entertained many a paramour, when faced with a female villain he finds himself more often than not having to explain why he hasn't called lately.
Powers
The Nine Sands of Topeshazan
Being infused with some of the essence of the sand ifreet, Topeshazan, Joe can unconsciously summon a miniature (a couple grains thick) barrier of sand to deflect incoming attacks before they land. Thanks to the magically imbued sand, in addition to increased resilience he also possesses increased physical strength and can deliver powerful blows. The downside to all this, of course, is the fact that he is always trailing sand after a fight. Though he's gotten used to occasionally waking up to several thousand granules of earth littered about his bed in the morning, he still really, really hates it.
